Samarasinha: Belarus has done a lot towards SDGs

MINSK, 25 October (BelTA) – Belarus has already done a lot to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha told reporters on 24 October, BelTA has learned.

Sanaka Samarasinha noted that work is underway to implement the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the Republic of Belarus for 2016-2020. The UNDAF focuses on four strategic areas of response: environment, economy, governance and education. “Many important UN projects and initiatives are running in Belarus today. One of the project aims to provide services to the population and improve the quality of social services. Another major project includes events to strengthen the health of the nation. The UNDP will also assist Belarus in the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” Sanaka Samarasinha said.

He emphasized that the new campaign Inclusive Belarus will be welcomed by the people of Belarus in general and by each particular individual. “Every person has a dream, and everyone has something to offer. Everyone deserves respect. We all will benefit from an inclusive society,” Sanaka Samarasinha added.

BelTA reported earlier that Minsk's Loshitsa Park hosted a tree planting ceremony to mark the 71st anniversary of United Nations Organization and the launch of the Inclusive Belarus campaign on 24 October. Attending the ceremony were representatives of UN agencies, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other ministries and agencies, Minsk City Hall, diplomats and members of the public.
