Russian police thanks Belarusian police for cooperation during 2018 FIFA World Cup

MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – The Russian Internal Affairs Ministry will award a number of Belarusian police officers in recognition of their services in maintaining public order in trains during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry website.

Russian Internal Affairs Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev has sent a letter to Belarusian Internal Affairs Minister Igor Shunevich to express gratitude for assistance and practical cooperation in maintaining public order in trains during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which took place in Russia on 14 June – 15 July. The letter thanks Belarusian police for professionalism and quick action. The Russian Internal Affairs Ministry will award medals for strengthening international police cooperation to a number of Belarusian police officers.

A working group was set up for the duration of the world cup to coordinate information exchange and monitor the transportation of football fans by rail and by air. The working group had been established by the joint order of the Belarusian and Russian internal affairs ministries in order to improve control over third-country citizens staying in the Union State of Belarus and Russia. Prior to and during the world cup police officers escorted 1,450 international trains and 1,730 commuter trains, which transported about 10,000 fans. Riot police of the Minsk City Police Department helped beef up security in Belarus for the duration of the world cup. No public disorder was registered during travels of organized fan groups, noted the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry.
