Russian Duma speaker calls to keep memory of Khatyn tragedy

MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) – Among the many dreadful things that happened during the Great Patriotic War, the tragedy of Khatyn has always had a special place, Russian State Duma Speaker, Chairman of the Belarus-Russia Union State Parliamentary Assembly Vyacheslav Volodin noted in a letter dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Khatyn tragedy he addressed to Speaker of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich, BelTA informs.

“Among the many dreadful events that happened during the Great Patriotic War, the Khatyn tragedy has always had a special place. The massacre of 149 Khatyn residents symbolizes the unprecedented cruelty and inhumanity of fascism. 186 Belarusian villages shared the fate of Khatyn during the war. Our nations will always remember the sorrow and pain of those events,” reads the letter.

“Though three quarters of a century have passed, we still remember the tragedy and we always will. It is important to keep the memory of those events, to fight against travesties of our history and attempts to justify murderers and sadists for political purposes. This is the only way to protect the current and future generations from the repetition of such crimes again and to preserve peace in our land,” Vyacheslav Volodin believes.
