Russian agency to help license Belarusian nuclear power plant operation

VIENNA, 21 September (BelTA) – The Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostechnadzor) will consult Belarus when safety parameters will need to be evaluated in order to license the operation of the first power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from Oleg Sobolev, Head of the Communications and Public Information Department of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor), after a delegation of the Belarusian agency met with Rostechnadzor representatives during the 61st session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

The Belarusian and Russian nuclear industry regulatory agencies discussed the practical implementation of bilateral agreements. In particular, Rostechnadzor's assistance with oversight in the run-up to and the actual commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was mentioned. The evaluation of safety parameters by experts in order to license the operation of the first unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant was also discussed.

Apart from that, the sides discussed Rostechnadzor-Gosatomnadzor interaction in preparations for the staff exercise, which will be held in Belarus on 18-19 October 2017 to practice interaction between government agencies and divisions as they respond to a radiation accident.
