Remains of 765 war soldiers unearthed in Belarus since start of 2018

MINSK, 19 June (BelTA) - Since the start of 2018 the search battalion has found the remains of 765 soldiers killed during the Great Patriotic War in Belarus and handed them over for re-interment, Sergei Voronovich, the head of the department for commemoration of Fatherland defenders and war victims at the Armed Forces of Belarus, told the media, BelTA informs.

According to Sergei Voronovich, search operations are conducted by the 52nd separate search battalion. “As many as 79 sites are included into the search plan for 2018. As for today, works have been conducted at 17 sites, including three additional areas. The remains of 765 war soldiers were unearthed and handed over for re-interment. They included 59 soldiers of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, 644 war victims, and 62 WWI soldiers. Nine persons have been identified so far,” he said.

“In May-June 2018, the 52nd search battalion discovered remains of 62 soldiers of the Imperial Russian Army in the village of Mankovichi, Postavy District, and found the cartridge cases with notes inside. Thus, we identified two privates and one officer,” Sergei Voronovich said.
