Registration open for 7th Grodno-Druskininkai Friendship Marathon

GRODNO, 6 January (BelTA) – Registration has opened for the seventh edition of the Grodno-Druskininkai International Friendship Marathon, BelTA learned from the sports and tourism department of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee.

The cross-border race will connect the Belarusian city of Grodno and Lithuania's Druskininkai on 9 July. The sports event will bring together amateur and professional runners from Belarus, Lithuania and other countries.

“We received some 15 applications on the first registration day. Among the applicants there are citizens of the United Kingdom, the United States, the Czech Republic and Germany. Last year's edition of the marathon gathered participants from nine countries,” representatives of the sports and tourism department said. Applications can be submitted on the official website of the marathon www.draugystesmaratonas.lt. The earlier the application date, the lower the fee.

The start and the finish points of the marathon will be different from those of the last year's event. In 2016, the race kicked off from Druskininkai's central square. This year, the runners will set off from the Neman Sports Center in Grodno. The athletes will cover a distance of precisely 42km and 195m. The marathon is certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Apart from the overall winner, the marathon will also decide winners in several age categories.

The unique cross-border marathon is popular with the so-called ‘marathon collectors'. There is a similar marathon linking Canada and the United States. The runners will have no trouble crossing the Belarusian-Lithuanian border as they will pass the customs and border control before the start. The participants of the cross-border sports project will learn about the history of Belarusian and Lithuanian cities and visit cultural and sports sites. The organizers believe that the event is a great example of the cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
