VIENNA, 28 September (BelTA) – Nuclear and radiation protection regulatory agencies of Belarus and several Northern Europe countries signed a memorandum on cooperation during the 60th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on 28 September, BelTA has learned.
The document was signed by Head of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry Olga Lugovskaya, Director General of the Norwegian Radiation Protection Agency (NRPA) Ole Harbitz, Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK) Petteri Tiippana, and Director General of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority Mats Persson.
In line with the document the parties will cooperate and share information about the legal foundation for regulatory activities, safety and security regulations in the course of peaceful uses of nuclear energy and allied fields.
Cooperation will be focused on sharing the experience of operation, research and development, on raising safety levels, reducing the risk of major accidents, on alleviating consequences of such accidents, and regulating the turnover of radioactive waste.
With this memorandum the sides confirmed the mutual interest and consistent steps on advancing cooperation in regulating nuclear and radiation safety that were mentioned when representatives of the regulating agencies of Norway, Finland, and Sweden visited Belarus in May 2015.
