Project to upgrade border checkpoint at Belarusian-Lithuanian border to finish in 2022

MINSK, 5 November (BelTA) – Renovation of the Kamenny Log-Medininkai border checkpoint at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border will be completed in 2022, BelTA learned from the State Customs Committee of Belarus.

“This project will improve the border crossing procedures as waiting times for transport will be reduced and people's safety improved. The project will increase Belarus' transit attractiveness. Launched on 1 August 2019, the project will be running for 30 months,” the State Customs Committee said.

The road connecting the Kamenny Log border checkpoint and the Medininkai border checkpoint will be widened and will have more traffic lanes in every direction. The project also provides for building pedestrian walkways and improving the transport infrastructure at the border. Moreover, the project envisages training sessions for Belarusian and Lithuanian customs personnel to exchange best practices, harmonize infrastructure requirements and improve skills.

In September 2016, the State Customs Committee of Belarus confirmed its readiness to become partner of the Directorate of Border Crossing Infrastructure under the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications in order to implement the project. The project is carried out in line with the cross-border cooperation program Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus for 2014-2020 and is financed by the European Union. The partnership agreement was concluded by all beneficiaries on 31 December 2018 and the grant contract was signed on 14 May 2019.
