Opinion: WorldSkills helps improve quality of vocational training in Belarus

MINSK, 17 May (BelTA) - WorldSkills has become an effective platform for interaction between the education sector and the real economy sector and raises the bar higher for the vocational education system in Belarus, Rector of the National Institute of Vocational Education Valery Golubovsky said at a press conference at BelTA's press center.

“WorldSkills is not just a championship but a serious platform for interaction between the education sector and the real economy. The competition is aimed at promoting working professions among young people. It also helps update the content of the educational environment. The preparation for the event, when it is systemic, raises the vocational education system to a new level. It means the deferred economic effect for the real economy sector, as future specialists will be more qualified, and better investment attractiveness for the country,” Valery Golubovsky noted.

By taking part in these international competitions, Belarusian specialists study the most up-to-date technologies and share experiences, said Olga Matsikova, Vice Rector of the Mogilev State University of Food, chief expert in the Cooking competence of the third WorldSkills Belarus 2018. “Participants of the previous contests became successful professionally. For example, one of the contestants in the Cooking competence undertook an internship in Spain where she was trained by a famous chef,” Olga Matsikova said.

The major expert in the Painting and Decorating competence Alexander Rodyukov who represents private business underlined the importance of cooperation between the real economic sector and educational institutions in vocational training. “WorldSkills is a great opportunity for young people to improve their qualifications,” Alexander Rodyukov said.

WorldSkills is an international not-for-profit movement. Its aim is to enhance the prestige of skilled work, and develop skills and excellence worldwide. WorldSkills championships are held every two years in various countries. They bring together young qualified workers, students and well-known professionals, educators and experts.

The final stage of the 3rd edition of the nationwide contest of professional excellence WorldSkills Belarus 2018 will be held in Minsk on 22-23 May. The winners of the national contest will represent Belarus in the world championship WorldSkills Kazan 2019. Belarus joined the movement in 2014.
