Opinion: Achieving SDGs possible only through joint efforts

MOGILEV, 18 January (BelTA) - Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Belarus is possible only through the joint efforts of all parties concerned, Tatyana Kononchuk, the head of the permanent commission on ecology, environmental management and the Chernobyl disaster of the House of Representatives, said at the first meeting of the regional working group on sustainable development in Mogilev, BelTA has learned.

Belarus is committed to the implementation of the 2030 agenda. Seventeen SDGs are its integral part along with 169 subordinate tasks that must be achieved by 2030. Currently, work is in progress to achieve the SDGs (the actual implementation of the international commitments at the national level). “First of all, it is the implementation of the social and economic development program, adjustment of all state programs taking into account the indicators related to the SDGs. This work is carried out both at the national and regional levels,” Tatyana Kononchuk noted.

Mogilev Oblast has set up a working group to draw up a strategy for the development of the region. It is not only about the implementation of some indicators but also about the consolidation of all branches of government, organizations and enterprises of all forms of ownership, and, of course, interaction with the people living in the territory. “What is important is the search for resources, points of growth and human development. We need to create a society that sees its mission, the new image of the desired future and aspires to achieve it,” the MP noted.

She also stressed that Mogilev Oblast has already accumulated some experience and gained positive momentum both in terms of the use of local resources, development and promotion of territories and cooperation with international organizations.

The meeting participants developed the algorithm of work in 2018, discussed the plans and prospects for the development of territories and presented a successful experience in various projects.

“In our work we intend to focus on the new approaches and creative initiatives aimed at the sustainable development and improvement of life of people. Projects must meet the needs of the territories, improve the business climate with a view to promoting youth employment and self-employment, the mitigation of climate change, tourism, and the rational use of the protected areas,” noted Ruslan Strakhar, deputy head of the regional working group on sustainable development, chairman of the economy committee of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee.
