Nominations for 2016 National Wall of Fame announced in Belarus

MINSK, 6 June (BelTA) – The list of nominees for the 2016 National Wall of Fame features 67 names, Belarus Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said at a meeting of the Presidium of the Council of Ministers to discuss the draft decree on the nominees to the National Wall of Fame in 2016, BelTA has learned.

New names are added to the National Wall of Fame annually, in accordance with the decision of the president, in a solemn ceremony prior to the Independence Day celebrations. These are the best regions and labor groups of the country. The government reviewed the draft decree of the head of state on winners in the social and economic development and in the field of resource saving 2016.

This review was preceded by a large collective work to select the candidates and choose the best among them. “2016 was not an easy year. The economic performance was discussed at meetings of the government bodies of all levels: the government, ministries and executive committees. Steps have been identified to bring the country back to the path of sustainable balanced development,” the head of government said.

In December last year presidential decree No. 435 of 1 December 2016 amended the regulations on the National Wall of Fame, according to which the regions cannot be nominated if their economic growth does not exceed the previous year's level. Taking into account the 2016 results, the Economy Ministry has suggested no candidates among the regions and the city of Minsk.

“At the same time, many enterprises and organizations showed diligence, enterprising spirit and excellent teamwork and were able to respond quickly to the external and internal factors and showed good financial and economic results. Thanks to such work, despite all the challenges and problems in the country in 2016, we were able to ensure the macroeconomic balance and financial stability. Such groups deserve recognition. The best way is to put their names on the National Wall of Fame,” Andrei Kobyakov noted.

The Economy Ministry together with the Belarusian Statistics Committee, government bodies, the regional authorities and the Minsk City Hall nominated 67 candidates for the National Wall of Fame in 2016. among them 45 have been nominated for the best results in the social and economic development, and 22 for the best results in saving resources.

The criteria and procedure for selecting the winners are envisaged in the regulation on the National Wall of Fame. For example, the social and economic development of the regions is assessed across 17 major indicators. Last year most points were scored by Gomel (60 points), Grodno District (50 points), Sovietsky District of Minsk and Dzerzhinsk District of Minks Oblast (49 points each).

The prime minister noted that this year, unlike previous years, the nominations are supported by all government bodies, without exception. The draft decree has been supported, without much debate.

This year's criteria for entering the nominees to the National Wall of Fame were toughened, Deputy Economy Minister Alexander Chervyakov told the media. “There is now the criteria related to corruption, arrears of wages. Export, investment, creation of new jobs still remain relevant. These criteria are used to assess the performance of organizations, administrative-territorial units, and regions,” Alexander Chervyakov said.

Following the discussion the Presidium of the Council of Ministers supported the draft decree. Soon it will be sent to the head of state together with the government proposals to improve the mechanism for nominating the entries to the National Wall of Fame.
