Nepal: 20 Dead As Bus Plunges Into River

KATHMANDU, 26 August (BelTA - Bernama) - At least 20 people died when a bus they were travelling in fell 200 meters down the road and plunged into the swollen river at Chandibhyang of Chitwan, early Friday.

"So far 20 dead bodies have been retrieved from the wreckage, which is totally submerged," deputy superintendent of police Basanta Kuwar said.

Police suspect more casualties as the exact number of passengers on board has not been asserted.

The bus initially had 38 passengers when it left Rautahat for Pokhara and more passengers boarded along the way, Kuwar said.

Seventeen injured passengers have been rushed to the hospital in Chitwan for treatment.

"As the bus is totally submerged in the swollen river, rescue operation has been difficult. Search and rescue efforts are underway with the help of the Nepal police and Armed Police Force," DSP Kuwar said.

The identity of the deceased has not been identified thus far.
