Most of extramural education in Belarus may become commercial

MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) – The bulk of the extramural education available in Belarus may become commercial. The proposal was discussed as Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko met with Deputy Prime Minister Vasily Zharko and Education Minister Igor Karpenko, BelTA has learned.

After the meeting Vasily Zharko said that they had discussed extramural education among other things. A government commission suggests making students pay for the bulk of extramural education. Secondary school graduates will have to pay for extramural education after one year of employment in order to give them time to get some understanding about their future careers. Extramural education in some specializations can be financed by the state budget, too.

According to Vasily Zharko, there is a difference between the quality of education available to extramural and intramural students. “I think people with a vocational school degree or a college degree should be the ones to make an informed choice in favor of extramural education,” he said.
