Minsk to host WMO workshops on 2-4 October

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) – Minsk will host workshops on World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Integrated Global Observing System and the Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay on 2-4 October, BelTA learned from the Belarusian National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control and Environmental Monitoring (Belgidromet) at the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.

Minsk will also host meetings of the Regional Association VI on the WMO Integrated Global Observing System and aircraft observation. Representatives of 18 states will take part in the meetings.

The WMO Integrated Global Observing System provides a comprehensive approach to the upgrading of the global climate observing systems and their gradual development. Together with the WMO Information System (WIS), it provides all the WMO member states with reliable and timely weather, climate, water and environment data in general.

The Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay is a sub-system of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System, which is defined and maintained under the WMO World Weather Watch Programme. The system uses the aircraft's existing sensors, avionics and telecommunications system to gather, process and disseminate data to land-based stations. The data is used for a range of meteorological applications, including weather forecasting, climate monitoring and forecast, early warning systems for weather hazards and, weather monitoring and prediction in support of the aviation industry.

“National Meteorological Services of the WMO members transmit important meteorological data and information about climate change all over the world 24/7. Timely and accurate weather and climate predictions help prepare in advance for emergency situations, minimize the consequences for the society and the environment,” Belgidromet noted.

The WMO workshops will take place in the run-up to the 30th anniversary session of the CIS Intergovernmental Council for Hydrometeorology due in Minsk on 17-18 October.
