Minsk cancer center gets ultrasound scanner thanks to Japanese government's grant

MINSK, 26 July (BelTA) – Ultrasound scanning equipment has been handed over to the Minsk city early cancer treatment center as part of the Japanese government's program Grant Assistance for Grassroots and Human Security Projects (Grassroots for short), BelTA has learned.

Over $80,000 was granted with a view to improving the medical equipment the Minsk early cancer treatment center has. The money was spent on buying a new ultrasound scanner. It was the first time money had been granted in Minsk as part of the Grassroots program.

The new equipment will improve the quality of medical services available to people in Minsk and beyond. The cancer center welcomes patients with the gravest forms of cancer from other regions of the country, too. People affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident and rescue workers, who were involved in the Chernobyl cleanup operation, are among them.

The Japanese government has been implementing the Grassroots program in Belarus since 2004. The financial assistance helps improve social infrastructure, develop the sphere of education and healthcare. In Belarus the program is supposed to assist with initiatives meant to overcome consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. As many as 38 projects worth over $3 million were implemented in 2004-2017. As many as 207 units of equipment were bought for healthcare institutions across the country.
