Miniscule chances of terrorism financing via Belarus

MINSK, 25 November (BelTA) – The chances of terrorism financing via the Belarusian banking system are miniscule, BelTA learned from Vyacheslav Reut, Director of the Financial Monitoring Department of the State Control Committee of Belarus.

The official noted: “The chances of so-called transit financing are miniscule. It is very difficult to track these operations. But we are intent on detecting such transit flows. As far as terrorism financing directly from Belarus is concerned, the probability is negligible.”

The representative of the Belarusian auditing agency reminded about terrorist attacks in Spain when train explosions were arranged. Those attacks needed at least €1,500 while the 9/11 attacks in the USA needed a total of $500,000. “Any fanaticism needs financial support. It is impossible to wage wars or organize terrorist attacks without funding,” stressed Vyacheslav Reut. “Not a single bank now operates in the ISIS area yet someone still supplies weapons to the terrorists for waging a full-blown war. It means the money still comes from some sources. Oil extracted in captured areas gets sold. It means someone buys it.”

According to the source, countries across the globe, including Belarus, should take an active part in efforts meant to prevent the legalization of criminal revenues and terrorism financing. It is necessary to regularly improve national laws. It is important for the national security in Belarus, too, he said.
