Meer Axelrod's exhibition in memory of Holocaust victims to open in Vitebsk on 25 January

VITEBSK, 23 January (BelTA) – An exhibition “The Nazi occupation in the graphic works by Meer Axelrod" will open at the Marc Chagall Art Center on 25 January, BelTA learned from the Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk.

The exhibition includes the graphic works: sketches to the series “The Nazi occupation” and “The Nazi Atrocities”, the illustrations and working materials to the books of Noyah Lurie, Riva Rubina, Mikhail Lev, Leib Kvitko and others. “The world of executioners and victims, violence, tortures, shootings, ruins - the grim scenes convey the tragic experiences of the war years with the documentary precision. A large number of completed works telling the same plot, executed on different types of paper and with the use of different technology demonstrate the endless quest for the greater expressiveness,” the museum said.

The exhibition is a joint project of the Vitebsk museum, Israeli political expert Ilia Vasiliev, Alexander Pechersky Fund and Vellum gallery (Moscow).

Organizers noted that this is the first time Meer Axelrod's works will be exhibited in Belarus. The exposition will open in the run-up to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day which is observed annually on 27 January.

Meer Moiseevich Axelrod (1902-1970) was a Soviet painter, member of the Four Arts society, a native of Molodechno. He left a great heritage: about six thousand paintings and graphic works. The unique series “The Nazi occupation” was made during the Great Patriotic War.
