Maltsev: Misunderstandings arise during Belarus-Ukraine border demarcation

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – Various misunderstandings arise during the Belarusian-Ukrainian border demarcation, Chairman of Belarus' State Border Committee Leonid Maltsev said at a meeting with heads of the national mass media, BelTA has learned.

“On the Polish border, people are long accustomed to the border marked back in the days of the Soviet Union. The border in the Baltic direction was demarcated long ago too. Meanwhile, we face different misunderstandings during the demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border,” Leonid Maltsev said.

“Let's take, for example, the border strip where you can stay only if you have special permits from border guards. We hear all kinds of insinuations and statements alleging that the border guards do not allow economic activity there, that a large amount of land is unused, that private traders are not let through. This is nonsense. There are no problems or issues. There are rules. You need to apply for a permit first, and then you will be let through,” he said.

Leonid Maltsev noted that earlier the Belarusian-Ukrainian border was not marked and citizens of the two countries could inadvertently violate it when going fishing, for example. It is hard for them to get used to the fact that a part of the area which they used to visit freely now belongs to another country.
