Lavrov: A war on monuments is absolutely immoral, unacceptable

MINSK, 16 May (BelTA) – A war on the Great Patriotic War monuments is absolutely immoral and unacceptable, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

The Minister noted that one of the key areas of cooperation between Russia and Belarus is preserving the historical memory and prevention of the re-writing of the history of the Great Patriotic War, the Second World War. “Our common position is that attempts to fight against monuments to the heroes of the war who liberated Europe from the fascism are absolutely immoral and unacceptable,” Sergei Lavrov said.

During the visit to Belarus, Sergei Lavrov met with President Alexander Lukashenko, and held talks in the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister recalled that in February this year the parties adopted a program of concerted action in foreign policy of the Union State by 2016-2017. Today, representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs reviewed the joint steps envisaged in this document. According to Sergei Lavrov, the program is implemented in full compliance with the instructions of the Supreme State Council of the Belarus-Russia Union State.

“Schedule of our interaction is very, very intense. Out cooperation develops at all levels and in a variety of dimensions,” said the Minister. In this connection he recalled the recent visit of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to Belarus, and the plans to hold another forum of regions of Belarus and Russia.
