Kusturica: Indie cinema will always be relevant

VITEBSK, 13 July (BelTA) – Indie cinema will always be relevant, celebrated Serbian director Emir Kusturica told the media at the Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk on 12 July, BelTA has learned.

In Vitebsk Emir Kusturica presented his film On the Milky Road and shared his views of contemporary cinema. “Today we see a very strong influence of Hollywood. I don't know what will happen in ten years, but I am convinced that indie cinema will always be there because its purpose is to strike a deep chord within us, to provoke strong emotions and feelings, make the viewer stop and think,” the director said.

When speaking about the process of making an indie movie, Emir Kusturica stressed that this is hard work. “To make an expressive movie, a director, being an architect of the soul, should feel the whole structure of every set-up, clearly understand the beginning and the end of it,” he said and recalled the words by Monica Bellucci who admitted she never worked like this in her life.

This is the first visit of the Serbian director to Vitebsk. He said his first impressions of the city were really good. “I'm happy to come here, to take part in this grand festival. I love your country. I have not yet visited the Marc Chagall Museum which my daughter talked about a lot. I will do this on 13 July. Because I worked like Chagall,” Emir Kusturica joked referring to his busy schedule.

Goran Bregovic and the Weddings and Funerals Orchestra, Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra will perform in the Summer Amphitheater in the evening of 13 July. “The concert will be super,” the director promised.

On the Milky Road is a three-part narrative following selected critical periods in the life of a man and his country, from a time war, to when he falls in love and ends as a hermit monk. The film stars Emir Kusturica and Monica Bellucci. The film was first screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2016.
