Kaspersky Lab co-founder hails Belarus government cloud computing project

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) – The creation of a cloud computing platform for the benefit of Belarusian government agencies is the right decision. The statement was made by Natalya Kasperskaya, head of the InfoWatch group of companies, co-founder of the Kaspersky Lab company (Russia), during the Business Information Security Summit in Minsk on 31 May, BelTA has learned.

Natalya Kasperskaya said: “I see a clear trend in favor of Internet sovereignization, to coin a phrase, and the establishment of borders. It is done by China, Russia, and Europe. By the way, Europe is building internal borders. Germans are building something of their own and the French are building something, too. It is a logical manifestation of the fact that in the past the World Wide Web looked bright, united, and good to everyone, but nowadays it demonstrates other sides, too, as the Internet becomes part of our lives. It is clear that criminals easily become part of the Internet. Hence, it is necessary to build something of your own.”

Natalya Kasperskaya also noted that the negative attitude of some information security specialists to cloud technologies can be explained by the use of third-party cloud computing services. The problem of responsibility for data leaks is not fully resolved in such cases.

BelTA reported earlier that decisions have been made to build a cloud computing platform in Belarus for government agencies. Belarusian Cloud Technologies (beCloud) is implementing the project. The company started building a national data center in 2015. Belarusian government agencies are supposed to become the first clients of the national cloud computing platform.

The data center will become Belarus' first data storage facility that complies with the Uptime Institute's Tier III requirements. The data center's engineering infrastructure has been created by Emerson Company. A lot of Belarusian technologies and solutions will be utilized in the course of the project's implementation. The contribution of Belarusian contractors to the project exceeds 50%.
