Karlyukevich: Digital transformation of media space changes journalism

MINSK, 13 September (BelTA) - The digital transformation of the media space is changing journalism, Belarus' Information Minister Alexander Karlyukevich said at the 13th Belarusian International Media Forum Partnership for the Future: Digital Agenda for Media Space on 12 September, BelTA has learned.

"Digital transformation is happening very fast. It brings new technologies and changes the paradigm of journalism. Social media has a strong impact on the information sector. As a result, everyone can influence the agenda. Along with positive changes, the digitization of the media space has certain negative consequences. It adversely affects credibility, quality and objectivity of information flow, " Alexander Karlyukevich said.

According to him, traditional media should become a powerful unifying tool in the fight against fake news and unprofessional approaches to coverage of serious problems. They also should ensure information ecology and protect individuals' personal information. The program of the media forum is an attempt to show what media technologies Belarus can bring to the global information space," the minister said.

He emphasized that the media forum is a place where agreements are concluded. "Belarus and Russia agreed on the internship of Belarusian journalists in the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper. Now we are discussing the development of various educational projects with the MIR radio company. Belarus is continuing negotiations with the Chinese news agency Xinhua, which has already concluded a number of agreements with Belarus' major media entities," Alexander Karlyukevich noted.

According to the report, the Belarus Segodnya publishing house and Belarus International Radio signed agreements on cooperation with Xinhua.

The 13th Belarusian International Media Forum Partnership for the Future: Digital Agenda for the Media Space is held in Minsk and Minsk District on 11-14 September. The media forum is attended by about 300 representatives of nearly 30 CIS and non-CIS states.
