Ivye to host Belarus' tomato festival on 18 August

GRODNO, 16 August (BelTA) – A “tomato fight” will take place in Ivye, Grodno Oblast, during a tomato festival on 18 August, BelTA learned from the ideology, culture and youth department of the Ivye District Executive Committee.

The tomato festival will be held in Ivye for the second time. Ivye is by right considered the tomato capital of Grodno Oblast. Every year local farmers supply over 4,500 tonnes of these vitamin-rich vegetables all over Belarus and the near abroad.

“The festival will be wholly dedicated to Ivye-grown tomatoes. According to a tradition launched last year, the first jar of fresh tomatoes will be pickled on the main stage,” the Ivye District Executive Committee said. The best seedlings from Ivye District will be handed over to a delegation from the twin-town of Aznakayevo from Tatarstan.

The festival will be packed with events. One of the draws will be throwing tomato-colored powder. Everyone is invited to take part in this Holi-like ritual.

The contest for the biggest tomato and the best tomato dish will be held during the festival. A tomato sandwich as long as several meters will be cooked. The jury will choose the winner of the Missis Tomato contest for the best carnival outfit. There will be a food court, music venues, playgrounds and numerous entertainment options. The festival will wrap up with flying a tomato air balloon.
