Investigation into country of origin of Belarusian-Ukrainian border trespassers

MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) – Belarusian law enforcement agencies are trying to find out where the people, who tried to break through the Belarusian-Ukrainian border near the border checkpoint Aleksandrovka, came from, BelTA learned from Oleg Lyashuk, Head of the Border Control Office of the State Border Committee of Belarus, on 20 March.

There is quite a distance between the border checkpoints of Ukraine and Belarus in this particular part of the state border, this is why it is difficult to say where the trespassers came from, explained Oleg Lyashuk.

BelTA reported earlier that a Jeep car reached the Belarusian-Ukrainian border at 01:45 on 20 March from Ukraine's side. At the border checkpoint Aleksandrovka the car rammed through the gate arm and the clearance gate and suffered mechanical damage by driving through the vehicle stopping device. A rapid response team of the State Border Committee of Belarus stopped the car at 01:55. The officers had to use firearms. Two persons inside the car were apprehended. They are being identified. According to the available information, there had been another person in the car. His or her whereabouts are yet unknown.

A TT pistol and two magazines were found inside the car as well as items that looked like explosive devices.

An investigation is in progress.
