International roundtable on book printing in Belarusian Polotsk on 2 September

MINSK, 1 September (BelTA) – The international roundtable session Diplomacy of the Word: Francysk Skaryna in the Global Humanitarian Space will begin in the Belarusian Book Printing Museum in Polotsk, Vitebsk Oblast on 2 September, BelTA has learned. The session will be dedicated to the 500th anniversary of book printing in Belarus.

For more than a decade the roundtable session has been held on Belarusian Written Language Day. Every year it gathers prominent writers, scientists, and public figures from many countries. The participants discuss topical matters of international cultural cooperation, problems of translating national literatures, printing books and periodicals in the modern age.

This year's roundtable session is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of book printing in Belarus. It will focus on several important topics at once: Francysk Skaryna and the origins of the Belarusian book printing industry; the 500th anniversary of book printing in Belarus as a major event in the cultural life of various nations; the development of book printing in Belarus as part of the global history of books.

Foreign participants of the event are expected to include Chairman of the Board of the public association Federal National and Cultural Autonomy of Belarusians of Russia, Honored Worker of Science of Russia, Professor Sergei Kandybovich. He will be accompanied by the poet, novelist, publicist, Candidate of Sociological Sciences, secretary of the administration of the Union of Writers of Russia Valery Kazakov. Representatives of the Science and Education Ministry of Kazakhstan, the University of Latvia, the National Library of Uzbekistan, the Baku Museum of Miniature Books, and other workers of science, culture, and art from 12 countries will also take part in the roundtable session.

The international roundtable session Diplomacy of the Word: Francysk Skaryna in the Global Humanitarian Space has been organized by the Belarusian Information Ministry, the public association Union of Writers of Belarus, the publishing house Zvyazda, the publishing house Mastatskaya Litaratura, and the Polotsk National Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve.
