International law competition Youth for Peace begins in Minsk

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) – The international law competition Youth for Peace has earned recognition of the international legal community. Belarusian Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky made the statement during the forum's opening ceremony in Minsk on 27 September, BelTA has learned.

According to the source, the law competition will spread knowledge in the area of international humanitarian law. Such contests allow broadening one's horizons in addition to reaching outside education curricula. “The fact that the contest has been arranged in Belarus for the 11th time indicates great success of the country. The competition for academic excellence in the knowledge of law has earned recognition of the global legal community. With this event Belarus will be able to declare itself as a platform where armed conflicts are resolved in a routine manner,” said Oleg Slizhevsky.

During the press conference Lionel Blackman, who is a member of the panel of judges and a lecturer at the South Bank University, London, mentioned the high educational level of Belarusian students during last year's contest. “I would like to mention not only academic knowledge but their creative abilities. I will be able to learn the educational level of students this year during the first stage of the contest on 28 September. Judging by the lecture I read on 26 September there is hope that the level will be at least as good as last year,” he said.

Lionel Blackman stressed that today's world is full of dangerous situations. “We see many armed conflicts. They cannot be resolved in one go. The Youth for Peace contest is one of the bricks that can create prerequisites for shaping the world,” he said. “It is unknown how the careers of the contest's participants will develop but if they become political leaders and lawyers, they will be able to recall it as the start of the dialogue. Students will also recall the methods used here to resolve conflicts.”

The law knowledge contest Youth for Peace gathered university students from China, the UK, Russia, Moldova, Armenia, Belarus, Germany, Netherlands and France. At every stage of the contest eight student teams will get a package of documents that describes a specific country and the conflict situation. The teams will have two hours to find solutions to the conflicts.

The law knowledge contest Youth for Peace has been arranged as part of the United Nations Organization's global initiative Academic Impact. The contest is supposed to spread the ideas of tolerance and intercultural dialogue among young people and demonstrate the importance of peaceful coexistence of nations.

The project has been organized by the International University MITSO with assistance of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB). The Belarusian Telegraph Agency provides coverage of the events.
