Information protection policy in Belarus hailed as effective

MINSK, 2 November (BelTA) – Effective measures are undertaken in Belarus to protect information, Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee Alexander Shumilin told the media on 2 November, BelTA has learned.

The official remarked that the third state science and technology program on information protection for 2016-2020 is underway in Belarus. The first one was launched in 2006. The programs helped develop and begin the practical application of 20 devices, 15 software and hardware systems, and 18 methodologies (recommendations). “Innovative goods worth $150,000 were produced in 2016,” Alexander Shumilin remarked. He specified that this refers to structures, protection systems, and software and predicted that the demand for such products on the market will keep growing. Alexander Shumilin cited a research by Kaspersky Lab, which showed that every second large company in the world suffers from a serious cyber attack every other month. Every company spends $450,000 a year on the average to recover from these attacks.

The scientific and innovative development of the information sphere and ways to ensure its security in Belarus and other CIS member states are in the spotlight of the international science conference “Issues of national and regional security: legal and information aspects”. Deputy State Secretary of Belarus' Security Council Vladimir Archakov pointed out that the number of crimes against information security in the world has been steadily growing. The CIS member states, including Belarus, take effective measures to counter crime in the information sphere. This matter is reflected in Belarus' national security concept. The country has joined several relevant international agreements. Vladimir Archakov recalled that in 2017, the year Belarus is presiding over the CSTO, an agreement was drafted on cooperation between the CSTO member states in information security.

The conference has brought together experts from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, CIS bodies, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, and the CSTO. Belarus' Institute of National Security is among the forum organizers.
