Importance of Belarus-U.S. cooperation in fighting cybercrime emphasized

MINSK, 6 June (BelTA) – Chairman of Belarus' Investigative Committee Ivan Noskevich stressed the importance of the cooperation between the law enforcement agencies of Belarus and the United States in investigating different types of crimes, especially in the field of high technology, as he met with a delegation of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Minsk, BelTA learned from the website of the Investigative Committee.

“Cybercrime is a major international issue today, because such crimes are committed, as a rule, by transnational organized groups that use the internet to cross the virtual borders between the states,” Ivan Noskevich said. He briefed the U.S. colleagues about the functions and duties of Belarus' Investigative Committee and its history. The parties exchanged opinions on the practical results of the working visit of the FBI representatives to Belarus.

FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Collins said that the hi-tech crime department of Belarus' Investigative Committee has participated in many special international operations conducted in cooperation with the FBI to combat the distribution of child pornography and detect multi-million thefts committed using fake bank cards and stolen card details.

Such crimes as trafficking in persons, violations of intellectual property rights and organized crime are also of particular concern, said First Secretary of the U.S. Embassy in Belarus Monica Bland, who also attended the meeting. The American and Belarusian parties could cooperate more closely in these areas. The participants of the meeting discussed ways to step up the cooperation between Belarus' Investigative Committee and the FBI.

The goal of the meeting was to strengthen the professional ties and promote constructive exchange of views on the topical issues of bilateral cooperation. The parties reached an agreement to hold workshops and expert consultations on a regular basis.
