Importance of 2nd European Games for supporting peace emphasized in UNESCO

MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – Ambassador of Belarus to France, Belarus' permanent representative in UNESCO Igor Fisenko mentioned the great importance of the 2nd European Games Minsk 2019 for supporting peace in the region in his speech during the plenary session of the 206th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, BelTA has learned.

Igor Fisenko said that Belarus has been a member of UNESCO for 65 years. The country pursues a balanced and persistent approach in defending principles of this influential international organization: working for the benefit of all countries in the areas of science, education, culture, and sport. In view of that Belarus' representative drew attention to the fact that Minsk will host the 2nd European Games in June 2019. He also mentioned the games' significance for the development of sport and for supporting peace in the region.

On behalf of Belarus the ambassador thanked UNESCO for many years of successful cooperation. Igor Fisenko also thanked the UNESCO Hydrological Commission for authorizing in March 2019 the international technical aid project designed to bolster international cooperation in the joint management of the Bug River and the Neman River. The project's volume of finance exceeds $12 million.

A regular session of the UNESCO Executive Board is taking place in the organization's HQ in Paris on 3-17 April. The main items on the agenda include UNESCO's reformation, ways to add dynamics to the organization's work, budget planning for 2020-2021 and preparations for the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference, which is due in November.

Belarus was elected to the UNESCO Executive Board in 2017.
