Historical re-enactors to recreate Brest Fortress defense episodes

BREST, 19 June (BelTA) – Historical re-enactors from 11 countries are planning to take part in the international military and historical event “22 June. Brest Fortress”, BelTA learned from the organizers.

The event will be held for the eighth time. It is expected that it will bring together about 550 re-enactors from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Austria, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Japan and China. Organizers invite young people to attend. This year the Brest cadets will welcome Russian Youth Army members.

First participants will arrive in Brest today. They will settle in the camp on the territory of the Kobrin fortification where they will recreate the life in time of war. The re-enactors will live in the camp and the rear barracks that housed the units of the 125th infantry regiment in 1941.

On 21 June, the re-enactors will march down from the Brest Fortress down streets of Zubacheva, Gogolya and Sovietskaya. The atmosphere of the last pre-war days will be recreated on the main pedestrian street. The main action will unfold at dawn on 22 June. After the commemorative meeting in the Brest Hero Fortress memorial, Brest residents and guests of the city will move to the Kobrin fortification where the reenactment of the legendary defense of the citadel on the Bug River will begin at 5.00 in the morning.

“We have developed a new scenario this year. The defense of the fortress includes many episodes that cannot be shown in 40 minutes. We will reenact the main battle and also new ones. They will include the battle of Private First Class Vasily Volokitin, an episode with a live shield, and a story of the daughter of Sergeant Major of the music platoon Valya Zenkina. Following the decision of the command, the girl was evacuated together with other children and women from the fortress but was taken prisoner together with her mother," the organizers said.

The reenactment of the terrible events which took place 77 years ago will feature pyrotechnics technologies, an armored car, a passenger car, GAZ-AA trucks, and motorcycles. “We want to show that war is a tragedy, the most disgusting thing that can happen in life,” the re-enactors said.

The reenactment festival is organized by the Brest Oblast Executive Committee, the Brest City Hall, the Brest Oblast Youth Center, the reenactment club Garnizon, the BRSM Youth Union, and the military commissariats of Brest Oblast and the city of Brest.
