Grodno Red Cross developing project to support parents of children with disabilities

GRODNO, 27 July (BelTA) – The Grodno Oblast Office of the Belarusian Red Cross Society (BRCS) is developing a project in cooperation with Latvia to provide support to families with children with disabilities, BelTA learned from the BRCS Grodno Oblast Office.

The office signed a cooperation agreement aimed at humanitarian collaboration with Plavinas Municipal Duma. The parties started developing a joint project to help families that have children with disabilities and provide support to the daycare center, which is the only center of the kind in the country. The organizers of the project have plans to attract funding through international technical assistance programs. “We have submitted our proposals regarding this center, the use of animal therapy as a method of treatment, and other kinds of assistance we provide to families with children with disabilities. Our Latvian partners have considerable experience in preparing cross-border projects for participation in contests for grants. They will give us some pieces of advice and help us prepare the bid documentation,” said Yelizaveta Baranova, Deputy Head of the BRCS Grodno Oblast Office.

Since 2009, the Grodno Oblast Office of the Belarusian Red Cross Society has been providing assistance to families with children with special needs. It is the only agency of the Belarusian Red Cross Society that has a daycare center for such kids. Volunteers working with the center provide help to some 50 families with children with disabilities. Initially, the center was financed by the Austrian and Norwegian Red Cross. Today it operates autonomously and aims to attract funding for the social project through a program of international technical assistance.

The BRCS Grodno Oblast Office agreed with the Latvian partners to cooperate in supporting other socially vulnerable segments of the population, including senior citizens, migrants and refugees. There are plans to conduct joint projects to teach people first aid basics, develop the emergency response system and the system of blood donation. Other plans include to create working groups, implement joint projects, and organize a joint research, conferences and trainings.
