Gomel to host veterans, peacekeepers 28-30 July

GOMEL, 27 July (BelTA) – Veterans, peacekeepers, soldiers, security and law enforcement officers from different countries and members of their families will hold a gathering “Memory Without Borders” in Gomel from 28 to 30 July, BelTA learned from Mikhail Zhukevich, Chairman of the Gomel Oblast Committee of the Belarusian Union of Afghan War Veterans which organizes the event.

It is expected to bring together over 220 participants from Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, and Estonia. “Many of them share the common past, including deployment to Afghanistan,” Mikhail Zhukevich said.

The participants are set to meet with the Great Patriotic War veterans, military personnel, and youth in sports and recreation camps of Gomel District. Heads of international delegations will meet with top officials of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee and the Gomel City Hall. An international roundtable “Veterans' movement: Ways to cooperate” will take place, too.

The recreation camp Sozhsky Bereg (The Sozh River Bank) near Gomel will host an international football tournament dedicated to Hero of the Soviet Union Grigory Denisenko, and also a music festival “Viva Victory!”. There are plans to hold competitions in shooting, archery, arm wrestling, darts, kettlebell lifting, and sport fishing. Exhibition performances by historical reenactment clubs and troops of military unit 5525 have also been announced.

At the end of the international gathering, Belarusian and foreign veterans' organizations will sign cooperation agreements.
