Five more border checkpoints can be equipped with radiation detectors in Belarus in 2017

MINSK, 4 July (BelTA) - Five more border checkpoints can be equipped with radiation detectors in 2017, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Customs Committee of Belarus.

“The State Customs Committee hosted a meeting between representatives of the State Customs Committee, State Border Guard Committee, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the National Nuclear Security Administration at the U.S. Department of Energy. During the talks, the parties discussed the issue of equipping five checkpoints with radiation detectors in 2017: Mokrany, Nevel (Brest customs), Veselovka, Novaya Guta, Komarin (Gomel customs),” the press service noted.

According to the State Customs Committee, Belarus is currently implementing the project of international technical aid “Strengthening the potential of detecting, combating and preventing the illegal trade in radioactive materials across the state border of the Republic of Belarus” and the U.S. has supplied radiation detection equipment for the checkpoints Oltush, Tomashovka, Verkhny Terebezhov, Mokhro (Brest customs) and Aleksandrovka (Gomel customs). The systems will be installed before the end of 2016.

“During the meeting the parties showed interest in developing cooperation aimed at enhancing the security of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border,” representatives of the State Customs Committee said.
