First unit of Belarusian nuclear power plant getting flushed, cleansed

MINSK, 11 December (BelTA) – Passive and active safeguards of the open reactor of the first power-generating unit of the Belarusian nuclear power plant are now being flushed with water, the press service of ASE Group (Atomstroyexport), the general contractor for the project to build the nuclear power plant, told BelTA.

It is one of the most important operations. It begins a series of tests to check systems and equipment of the primary circuit of the reactor plant.

Maksim Bogachko, Deputy Director for Heat Systems Installation at ASE Group, said that the reactor's systems are being flushed with chemically demineralized water to check their permeability and cleanse the pipes that connect pieces of equipment in the primary circuit. “In essence we've started preparations for hydraulic testing and circulation cleaning of the first circuit of the reactor plant,” he said.

The flushing procedure proceeds on schedule. As many as 26 technological systems are involved in the process.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is built using the Russian standard Generation III+ design AES-2006 near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.
