Final stage of CSTO army exercise Combat Brotherhood 2017 begins in Tajikistan

MINSK, 14 November (BelTA) – A solemn ceremony to begin the final stage of the strategic army exercise Combat Brotherhood 2017 for the collective rapid response forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) took place in the training area Kharbmaidon in Tajikistan, the press service of the Belarusian Defense Ministry told BelTA.

During the exercise the Belarusian troops are led by First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Belarusian army, Major-General Sergei Kuprik.

Taking part in the final stage of the strategic army exercise Combat Brotherhood 2017 are military contingents from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. The main purpose of the exercise is to improve cohesion of command and control bodies and joint practical actions of the combat units of the CSTO member states as they localize an armed conflict in a mountainous desert area.

Over 5,000 soldiers and officers will be deployed in Tajikistan for the duration of the exercise in addition to 60 air force units, 300 armored fighting vehicles and artillery units. The CSTO collective rapid response forces are supposed to practice working together in case terrorist groups infiltrate into Tajikistan from Afghanistan.
