Few computers in Belarus infected by WannaCry-like ransomware

MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – Only a handful of computers in Belarus have been infected as part of the latest cyber extortion campaign, which relies on a virus similar to WannaCry, BelTA learned from the National Computer Emergency Response Team of Belarus (CERT.BY).

According to the source, the Belarusian computer emergency response agency has received only several reports about computers infected with the extortion virus in the country. There is no wave of infection in Belarus for now, only a handful of computers have been affected, BelTA has been told.

The latest WannaCry-like ransomware encrypts files on affected computers and demands $300 worth of bitcoins in exchange for a decryption key. The virus has already attacked corporate networks in a number of countries across the globe. Ukraine and Russia have suffered the brunt of the attack. Experts believe that this ransomware virus relies on exploits initially used by the WannaCry virus, which affected computers in 74 countries in May 2017.
