Expert: Inscription of Minsk's Independence Avenue on UNESCO heritage list can be a challenge

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – The inscription of Independence Avenue (Prospekt Nezavisimosti) in Minsk on the UNESCO World Heritage List can be a great challenge, French Doctor in Art History Fabien Bellat said at the presentation of his book about Minsk Soviet-time architecture, BelTA has learned.

The architecture of Independence Avenue in Minsk is very interesting. At the same time the appearance of a modern building near the circus excites pity, and this can be a serious obstacle for the UNESCO experts to take a positive decision on the matter, said Fabien Bellat.

There are examples of the sites, however, that were included into the UNESCO World Heritage List, while even the possibility of their success was very much questionable, he noted. For instance, no one could imagine that the French city of Havre would be part of the list. Numerous publications about the city were among the things that influenced the positive decision of inspectors. Therefore, Fabien Bellat's book Stalin's Architecture of Minsk might help the Belarusian capital. By the way, Fabien Bellat's native city Rouen was denied the inscription on the list three times.

Optimism can help in any undertaking, and perhaps new approaches are needed in the presentation of the materials, Fabien Bellat added.
