EU's experience in application of conventions on migrant workers' rights of interest to Belarus

MINSK, 17 October (BelTA) – The EU's experience in the application of the conventions on the protection of migrant workers is of interest to Belarus, Aleksei Begun, the head of the citizenship and migration department at Belarus' Interior Ministry, said when welcoming the Mission of the International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in Minsk, BelTA learned from the information and public relations department of the Interior Ministry.

Aleksei Begun noted the relevance of the country's acceding to international treaties and conventions on the protection of the rights of migrant workers. “The country has already developed the legislation on migration taking into account the world experience, generally accepted legal norms and principles. Still Belarus is not a party to certain international conventions on the protection of the rights of migrant workers. Now we believe it is necessary for us to study the experience of the EU member states in part of defining the role of the international treaties and conventions on migrant workers. We are interested in the accession procedures, implementation of the standards into national legislation and their enforcement,” he explained

The experts got familiar with the main aspects of Belarus' legislation on external labor migration, and examined the experience on combating human trafficking and forced labor. In addition, they were informed of the mechanisms for the protection of the Belarusian citizens working abroad, and on the work of the legal entities carrying out activities related to the employment of citizens outside Belarus.

The program of the visit envisages visits to the citizenship and migration office of Minsk, the CIS Executive Committee, Office of the International Organization for Migration in Belarus and also meetings with representatives of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, Education and others

The visit has been organized within the framework of the initiative of the European Union and the ICMPD - MIEUX-2 (MIgration EU eXpertise). The goal of MIEUX-2 is to strengthen the capacity of partner countries in managing migration.
