EU mulls energy efficiency programs for Brest Oblast, Grodno Oblast

BREST, 16 October (BelTA) – Brest Oblast and Grodno Oblast have been selected as pilot regions for the implementation of the EU's new energy efficiency program, EU project coordinator in Belarus Elena Rakova said in Brest on 16 October, BelTA has learned.

“Next year we are launching a big resource and energy efficiency program worth €15 million. Brest Oblast and Grodno Oblast have been chosen as pilot areas. They will receive €10 million. A tender for executive committees will be open to both oblast centers and small towns. I think we will have 5-7 new interesting projects with the local executive committees by the end of 2019,” said Elena Rakova.

On 16 October Brest hosted a photo exhibition Faces of Projects that tells about the projects being implemented in Belarus with the financial support of the European Union mission. The photo exhibition features more than 30 projects in different areas: green economy, rural development, education, tourism, culture, business, inclusive practices. One of such projects to acquire a chunk plant for €500,000 has been implemented in Brest. EU technical assistance projects were also carried out in Kobrin and Baranovichi. A project to replace street lighting was launched in Bereza a month ago with the financial support of the European Union.

In general, the European Union spends about €30 million on various projects in Belarus every year, Elena Rakova said.

The photo exhibition will stay open in Brest until 29 October. Then it will travel to Gomel, Mogilev and Vitebsk. All in all, it will be on display in 20 cities of Belarus during the year.
