MANILA, 20 October (BelTA - Xinhua) - At least eight people were killed and two others missing after super typhoon Haima, locally named as Lawin, swept the northern Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Thursday.
The fatalities were reported in Regions 1, 2 and Cordillera Administrative Region, while the missing people came from Region 2, NDRRMC said.
The agency, however, said verification was still being conducted to determine if the casualties were really due to Haima.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development said 18,277 families or 80,275 persons were affected in 266 villages and most of them were sheltered in 209 evacuation centers.
Part of northern Philippines did not have power supply after transmission facilities and electric poles were destroyed by the typhoon.
A number of domestic flights were cancelled, while over 3,500 passengers were stranded at different airports.
Haima made landfall in Penablanca town in the northern province of Cagayan late Wednesday night.
The state weather forecasting agency said Haima has weakened and is moving away from the country.
