Dr. Steiner thanked for contribution to perpetuating memory of Trostenets death camp victims

MINSK, 24 October (BelTA) – Belarus highly appreciates the contribution of Dr. Hubert Steiner, an archivist with the Austrian State Archives, to the effort to perpetuate the memory of the victims of the Malyi Trostenets death camp, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Austria Valery Voronetsky said as he met with the historian, BelTA learned from the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Austria.

The Belarusian Embassy in Austria hosted a solemn ceremony to present the certificate of merit from the Justice Ministry to Dr. Hubert Steiner for his historical research. Ambassador Valery Voronetsky expressed appreciation to Dr. Hubert Steiner for his contribution to the study of the events related to the Nazi crimes in the territory of the modern Belarus. He underlined that the Belarusian side highly appreciates the contribution of the historian to the effort to perpetuate the memory of the victims of the Malyi Trostenets camp, among whom there were 10,000 Austrian Jews deported from Vienna during World War II.

In January 2016, Dr. Hubert Steiner visited Belarus and handed over to the Belarusian side the copies of the deportation orders from the Austrian State Archives with the names of the Austrian Jews who were killed by the Nazis in Trostenets. Dr. Hubert Steiner held talks with representatives of the Archives and Record Keeping Department of the Justice Ministry, the National Archives and the authors of the collection of documents and materials “Trostenets Death Camp”. The Austrian historian also visited the Khatyn Memorial and was briefed on the progress in the construction of the memorial on the site of the death camp in Trostenets.
