Dettmar: Town twinning movement brings people of Belarus and Germany closer together

NESVIZH, 24 June (BelTA) – The town twinning movement brings the people of Belarus and Germany closer together, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Peter Dettmar said at the ninth meeting of twin cities and towns of Belarus and Germany in Nesvizh on 24 June, BelTA has learned.

“It is important to promote the development of bilateral relations between regions. The partnership ties between towns lay the foundation for our relations. They bring people closer together and help find similarities and differences,” the diplomat pointed out.

Peter Dettmar emphasized the importance of engaging young people into the twinning movement, since it is they who will develop the Belarusian-German relations in the future.

The German diplomat noted that in 2016 the world marks the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster which hit Belarus the hardest. “The nuclear plant accident triggered an unprecedented wave of solidarity in Germany. The tangible assistance that has been provided to the people of Belarus brings fruit. Many public organizations, communities and towns have been providing aid. They demonstrated what can be done despite the geographical borders,” Peter Dettmar said.

The event brought together representatives of some 30 German and Belarusian towns and districts to discuss the economic and investment cooperation, the contribution of youth in the twinning movement and to exchange experience in cultural, educational and medical fields.
