CSTO peacekeeping exercise begins in Kazakhstan

MOSCOW, 16 October (BelTA) – The peacekeeping exercise Nerushimoye Bratstvo 2017 [Unbreakable Brotherhood] began in Kazakhstan on 16 October, BelTA learned from CSTO Press Secretary Vladimir Zainetdinov.

The exercise is scheduled for 16-20 October. It will take place in two exercise areas near the city of Almaty. The exercise is a logical continuation of the previous events: the tactical exercise Poisk 2017 for reconnaissance forces of the CSTO member states and the Vzaimodeistviye 2017 exercise for the CSTO collective rapid response forces.

The exercise Nerushimoye Bratstvo 2017 will focus on staging a peacekeeping operation in Central Asia. There are plans to practice deploying the CSTO collective peacekeeping forces in a non-CSTO country upon the relevant resolution of the UN Security Council. Interaction with international organizations in the course of peacekeeping missions will be practiced.

Air Force units, including unmanned aerial vehicles, will be used by the CSTO collective peacekeeping forces. Information and psychological warfare units will assist with building up the international trust in actions of the CSTO collective peacekeeping forces.

The CSTO collective peacekeeping forces will have to operate in conditions of massive arrival of displaced persons (refugees) from armed conflict areas. Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross are expected to partake in the exercise.

Over 1,500 personnel, over 200 weapon systems, military and special hardware units, 14 aerial vehicles will take part in the peacekeeping exercise Nerushimoye Bratstvo 2017.
