Crime rate down 4% in Belarus in 2016

MINSK, 22 December (BelTA) – The number of registered crimes in Belarus in 2016 decreased by approximately 4% over last year, Chairman of the Belarusian Investigative Committee Ivan Noskevich said in an interview with the ONT channel, BelTA has learned.

“Overall, the crime rate has decreased when compared with the previous year. The number of registered crimes is approximately down 4% as against last year,” Ivan Noskevich noted.

The Chairman of the Investigative Committee also commented on the high-profile corruption cases: Naftan, Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant (MZKT trademark), BelAZ. He noted that 2016 has been a year to take additional measures to compensate for the damage caused to the state. “In monetary terms, the size of the reimbursed damage in the criminal cases that were investigated by the Investigative Committee and the value of the seized property totaled about Br700 billion (pre-denominated). For example, the damage in the Naftan case was fully compensated, 100%. We are approaching 100% in terms of recovering the damage in the MZKT and BelAZ cases,” Ivan Noskevich noted.
