Contest on media coverage of disability issues in Belarus scheduled for 2018

MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) – Belarus' Information Ministry and the UNDP will hold a contest to cover the topic of disabled people and their opportunities in Belarus in 2018, Belarusian Information Minister Alexander Karlyukevich told the media following the ceremony to sign Belarus' information strategy on the full inclusion of disabled persons in the society, BelTA has learned.

The contest will make part of the information strategy signed on 4 December. The strategy is designed to systematize the work of mass media covering this issue. It is about outlining priorities in this field, including those of the Information Ministry, Alexander Karlyukevich said. “The fact that the strategy was signed emphasizes that all the news outlets will put a spotlight on this issue. This document will help work out a plan of action and not just call to engage in this process but also systematize this effort. This is about monitoring and defining new lines of action. We would like to see all the media involved in the process, including the regional ones,” the minister pointed out.

In this regard, Belarus will intensify cooperation with international institutions. Speaking about the forthcoming publications, the minister called on mass media to be hard-hitting and to publish such content about disabled people that will help solve their problems.

Plans have been made to hold educational events as from 2018 for journalists across Belarus writing about this topic, added UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha.

The information strategy on the full inclusion of disabled persons in the society makes part of the national plan of action to implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Belarus. The strategy was devised with support of Belarus' Information Ministry, the UNDP, and also governmental, international, and non-governmental organizations.
