Considerable decrease in ceasefire violations in Ukraine's conflict zone

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – A considerable decrease in ceasefire violations has been registered in the conflict zone in Ukraine, BelTA learned from Martin Sajdik, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, on 18 May.

Martin Sajdik said: “Since the statement about the full cessation of hostilities was made on 29 April, we have seen at least a considerable decrease in ceasefire violations.”

He also noted that members of the subgroup on security matters had continued working to reach the goal. They agreed that the joint center for control and coordination plays a key role in enabling a more lasting armistice. Possible separation of troops and assets along the contact line was discussed as well. “This is why the subgroup discussed possible areas for this kind of separation of forces and assets. Naturally the key areas are those where civilians will get maximum benefits from it,” specified Martin Sajdik.

The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office's special representative stated that the sides had continued discussing the release of prisoners of wars. “It is now obvious that the sides have different views on this important matter. Unfortunately, no progress in resolving this issue has been made so far,” he said.

The subgroup on economic affairs discussed the resumption of payments for water supply during the current round of talks. “We hope that the remaining technical issues will be resolved soon,” said the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office's special representative. Martin Sajdik added that people continue suffering from the conflict and humanitarian matters are as important as other ones.
