Call for tighter cooperation between Gomel Oblast, Germany

GOMEL, 23 May (BelTA) – Opportunities for cooperation between Germany and Gomel Oblast exceed the existing level. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Peter Dettmar made the statement during his fact-finding visit to Gomel on 23 May, BelTA has learned.

The Ambassador met with representatives of the Gomel Oblast administration. The potential of Belarus' southeastern region was presented before the guest. “Both Germany and Belarus are primarily interested in economic cooperation. I will gladly study the information provided by Gomel Oblast Governor Vladimir Dvornik. I will forward the information to representatives of German economic circles because I see that there is a good basis for further increase in cooperation between Gomel Oblast and Germany. The potential for cooperation exceeds the current level,” said Peter Dettmar.

The Ambassador also visited secondary school No. 49 in Gomel where the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad with assistance of the Embassy of Germany has been implementing an international project since 2011. It is a pilot project for Belarus. School students, who take part in the project, can take extra classes for free to prepare for German language proficiency certification exams DSD I and DSD II. Holders of such certificates can then study in Germany, work at German joint ventures in Belarus and other countries.

Peter Dettmar handed over certificates to 30 students, who had successfully passed their exams. He said he hopes that the students would continue improving their language skills. “The certificate is not the key goal of your efforts. It opens up broad opportunities for building a successful career in the future that can do a lot of good for maintaining and advancing Belarus-Germany relations,” stressed the Ambassador. He also praised the students' German language proficiency and thanked the school teachers for it.
