Bulgarian Sets Guinness World Record with Largest Crossword

Sofia, 23 August (BelTA - BTA) - Bulgarian Hristo Yonitsov has set a Guinness World Record by creating the largest unpublished crossword puzzle with 93,769 clues, which beats the previous record by close to 80,000 clues.

The record-holder told BTA that the hand-made crossword spreads over 1,001 sheets and is 300 metres long, which is not coincidental, as the number of sheets symbolize the One Thousand and One Nights collection of stories and tales, while the Eiffel Tower is exactly 300 metres high.

Hristo started the massive project back in 1997 and completed it 14 years later. The effort took hundreds of hours at the National Library in Sofia, where he went through the whole reference section in order to create an index of all the clues, all of which are unique.

After the crossword was verified by Guinness, a certificate was issued in 2014, which he got this summer and is now proudly displayed in his living room.

Hristo explained that creating crosswords has been a hobby of his for many years, but the main driving force for setting the world record was his desire to leave something behind and do good for Bulgaria, which in his words, should be mentioned positively more often.
