Brest, Tatarstan to cooperate in science

BREST, 11 October (BelTA) - An international science conference "Historical and cultural heritage Brest and Brest Oblast in museum and private collections" opened in Brest on 11 October, BelTA has learned.

The Brest Regional Museum of Local History, the Khalikov Institute of Archeology of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences and the State Historical and Architectural Art Museum-Reserve "Island-town Sviyazhsk" signed a trilateral agreement on cooperation at the opening ceremony.

"This is our first experience of holding a large international conference dedicated to the 1,000th anniversary of Brest. First of all, we want to learn what other regions and countries know about the history of the city, share the experience of studying museum exhibits, and establish contact with foreign museums. We have considerable experience in working with our colleagues from Poland and Ukraine. I am confident that cooperation with representatives of Russia will be fruitful,” said Aleksei Mityukov, Director of the Brest Regional History Museum.

According to Bulat Sultanov, First Deputy Director of the Khalikov Institute of Archeology, the partners have great potential for cooperation. “We want to exchange experience as we have a lot to learn from each other. We are interested in archeology. We intend to work together on the restoration of museum exhibits. We will discuss these plans in more detail later,” he said.

About 60 specialists have been invited to take part in the conference. Among them are museum workers, historians, local history specialists and collectors from Minsk and Belarusian regions, Russia's Kazan and Sviyazhsk, Poland's Lublin, Ukraine's Lutsk. The guests were introduced to a new guide to the Brest Regional Museum of Local History. The 66-page edition comprises information about the permanent exposition, collections, photos of museum rooms and exhibits. The guide is available in Russian. Plans are in place to translate it into English and Polish.

The conference in Brest is expected to become a regular event.
