Belavia: Belarus-Ukraine air passenger traffic continues to grow

MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – Belarus-Ukraine passenger air traffic continues to grow at a high pace, Igor Cherginets, Belavia's Deputy Director General for Marketing and Foreign Economic Affairs, told reporters, BelTA has learned.

"This traffic continues to grow. The growth is actually over 2 times," Igor Cherginets informed. He drew attention to the fact that on 17 December Belavia is opening a new flight Minsk-Kharkov. Starting from 22 December the number of flights between Minsk and Kiev will be increased to four. "Certainly, these flights have transit passengers but not only between Russia and Ukraine. The flow of transit passengers to the destinations throughout the Belavia route network, primarily in Europe, has been increasing,” said Igor Cherginets.

As was reported, the passenger traffic on Minsk-Kiev routes started growing as from 25 October when Russia and Ukraine imposed a ban on air service.

According to Igor Cherginets, last month the Minsk-Kiev traffic was about 500 people per day. For ten days the traffic made up about 5,000 respectively. “Previously, we had such number of passengers on the Minsk-Kiev route per month. The increase in the passenger traffic was achieved due to the growth in the number of transit passengers from Ukraine to Russia and from Russia to Ukraine via Minsk, Igor Cherginets informed.

Igor Cherginets also noted that passengers from Ashgabat and Tashkent actively use Belavia's services too. They fly to Minsk and then to Kiev. This, he explained, has to do with the fact that Ukraine's flights to Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were grounded. "Most of people in these countries started flying via our capital city. In addition, we have a good percentage of transit passengers from Kazakhstan,” said Igor Cherginets.

As was reported, Ukraine banned incoming flights by Russian airlines, and also banned, partially or completely, transit flights by Russian air carriers across the country. Russia responded by closing its airspace to Ukrainian airlines starting from 25 October.
